madrid & interlagos

let's throw in zürich for good measure because as i write this, justine henin and tatiana golovin are embroiled in the first set of their final, holding serve at 4 games apiece. i'm home this afternoon and evening (sorry, brussels mads, i hope my injured back excuse holds water and that none of your members ever chances across this entry) with every intention of watching the following finals today:

  • the atp madrid masters final between david nalbandian and roger federer. before roger got david's number in the senior tour, david owned roger on the junior circuit. the head-to-head record between the men used to be heavily in david's favour until roger started gaining ground on him and all the other players on the tour whom he could not beat in his younger years (such as tim henman). i'm rooting for my soul-eyed argentine, he who is no longer paunchy and fat. :) vamos, david!
  • the brazilian grand prix at the interlagos circuit in sao paulo. as i wrote in my previous entry, three men are fighting for the driver's championship title and right now (i took a break from blogging to do the dishes and clean the kitchen) my heart is beating twice as fast. i have conditioned myself to accept that lewis hamilton will make his explosive impact in formula one history but am crossing my fingers anyway that my beloved party animal kimi will somehow do the near improbable. allez kimi! :)

Baseball Bushido

Daisuke Matsuzaka came halfway around the world with another Japanese baseball player Hideki Okajima to play on the same major league team, the Boston Red Sox which used 103 million clams to lure the former (that's a lot of sushi) and today they stood on the mound celebrating their winning of the 7th and deciding game of the AL Championship Series.

Dice K pitched a steady game and received great support from Hideki and the rest of the team.

they earned the right to play in the World Series (who thought of this title?) to face the powerful team from colorado. the Colorado Rockies.

wildfire

at this moment, wildfires driven by powerful santa ana winds rages in california along the seafront between santa barbara and san diego.

a beautiful stretch of the U.S. that is now being scorched by this annual phenomenon. and a part of my favorite scenic drive : highway 1 (pacific coast highway).

I'm sure a part of the PCT (pacific coast trail), a hiking trail that stretches from mexico to canada is also being destroyed.

this is far from being contained.

I believe you have friends living in this area.

i got to drive along highway 1 more than ten years ago in john steinbeck country and agree that this is one helluva beautiful stretch. i hope the winds don't aggravate an already serious situation.

if by friends you mean the malibu hollywood a-listers... well! :)

matt falls just short of my slavering away at his feet but he does a fine job in the third installment of the bourne films. ben affleck just never clicked with me. not even with the lovely jennifer's by his side. :)

of the places in the east i have been able to visit, boston ranks among the highest in my affections.
